Kitchen Garden Herbs and Spices
Formed in Zimbabwe in 1990, Kitchen Garden Organics acts as a link
between third world Organic Producers and buyers in Europe. Their
aim is to offer quality organic products direct from the growers
at a Fair price to both producers and the buying public.
Goods are bought from producers as finished products, not just commodities-
providing income for local jar, bag, box, and label manufacturers,
and generating employment in the packing factory as well as improving
the skills base, in an economy which badly needs both. The producer
follows guidelines laid down by
European Fair Trade organisations, and is dedicated to the goals
of organic production under favourable working conditions offering
meaningful employment. Policies include worker participation in
management decisions, above average salaries, equal pay for men
& women, protective clothing, housing if required on the farms,
a pension scheme and in-house training. The company gives employment
priority to the post-school leaver population, resident on the farm,
so that the family unit is maintained. If further labour is required
it is recruited from nearby communities instead of using migrant
labour.
