1% Abundance Manchester
Abundance Manchester is great local community project that harvests fruit and veg from people’s gardens and allotments that would otherwise be wasted, and re-distributes it (mostly in bike trailers) to people who can make good use of it. Projects that they distribute to include homeless shelters, community cafés and asylum seeker groups.
The project provides a practical answer to the waste that can happen when people have ‘gluts’ of a particular crop, or just can’t use all their garden bounty! It also connects diverse groups of people though sharing out produce, and provides participants with an excuse to climb apple trees! Importantly, it also aims to demonstrate just how much is potential there is for feeding ourselves in cities, cutting food miles and re-connecting people with their food and immediate environment.
